We recently popped by Appetite — Nouri’s homely, interdisciplinary space that consists of a dining kitchen, art lounge and living room — to check out their latest art exhibition.
Titled Mise en Place, after the French phrase referring to gathering and putting things in their place, the exhibition features 6 local and international artists. We enjoyed how playful the works were, as they put a humorous, quirky spin on everyday objects.

Catherine Hu’s ‘Deflower Painting 11’ and ‘Deflower Painting 12’ (2022). The edges of the canvas bear a floral wallpaper print, while the front shows the intricate imprints of the wallpaper in white.
Up in the record bar are whimsical photographs by Mexican photographer Mauricio Alejo. Here’s Dinner Table (2012), which depicts a yellow pencil (perilously!) balancing on the edge of the table, as string connects it to a glass of water.
Thai artist Chayanin Kwangkaew’s oil painting Continue No. 1 (2019) features vibrant, sunset-hued flowers in a dark glass jar, which bursts forth from a stunningly intricate frame.
Over in the open kitchen — where guests can indulge in an Omakase menu — hangs a surreal photograph Sock Balls by Chen Wei. From afar, it looks like an abstract beach or landscape, littered with balls of colourful, bunched-up socks.
