It’s also a play on ‘decide’: you hold the agency here. Choose how you move through the space\, which works you encounter\, and what sides of us you uncover. \nThis production reunites DDC alumni across eight generations\, some sharing the stage for the very first time. Dance once felt infinite — now it lives alongside deadlines\, adulthood\, and the quiet negotiations of a busy life. D-SIDE is our refusal to let it go. It’s a celebration of a passion that has grown up with us\, continues to inspire our lives\, and come back richer for it. \nNote: Some works contain explicit language. Influenced by his engagement with image culture\, Tan constructs his compositions through orchestration and mediation\, creating works that feel both deeply personal and strangely relatable. Throughout his practice\, these moments form a visual language that reflects lived experience and broader emotional patterns. \nPressure Points features 14 new paintings that highlight this focus by exploring the various pressures shaping the artist’s life. Scenes of intimacy\, distance\, and quiet reflection unfold across the exhibition\, revealing vulnerability in Tan’s work as he navigates feelings of belonging and ambition. Rooted in autobiography\, the works examine the tension between revealing and controlling\, and between the desire to be seen and the urge to self-present. In this body of work\, Tan’s focus on the everyday becomes a form of introspection\, unveiling an emotional landscape shaped by negotiation\, aspiration\, and the complexities of modern life.

DESCRIPTION:ShanghART Singapore is delighted to present Simplified\, a solo exhibition by the\nChinese artist Tang Maohong\, opening on 16 May 2026 at 4pm. This exhibition brings\ntogether a selection of the artist’s latest paintings\, developed extensively over the past\nyear following his relocation to Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia. It also marks his return to\nSingapore after his 2019 solo exhibition\, and twenty years since his participation in the\nfirst Singapore Biennale. \nTang’s new body of work reflects a significant development in his practice\, centered\naround explorations into the process of painting\, and its relationship with the result.\nThe act of painting typically results in two outcomes – the image on the canvas and the\nmixed colours on the palette. The works stem from the approach of mixing colours\ndirectly on the painting surface instead of using a palette. This simple gesture\ncollapses two planes into one\, creating a mutually-influencing relationship within the\nsame pictorial space. \nOriginating from a period of constraint\, this approach has been refined over the past\nyear into a more distilled visual language. Tang pares down his compositions to focus\non the relationship between the intended image and the residual colour. Deceptively\nsimple\, the underlying tension is withheld from the apparent harmonious coexistence\nof the two elements\, experienced only upon prolonged inspection. \nTang’s practice has consistently engaged with the nature of images and how we\nperceive them. He initially opted to work with animation for its ability to explore the\ninstability of images through time. Forms derived from the real world would morph\,\ndissolve\, and reassemble\, remaining familiar yet resistant to fixed interpretations.\nOver time\, this temporal process became increasingly condensed\, leading him back to\npainting. What once unfolded sequentially is now internalised\, with shifts and\ntransformations embedded within a single\, suspended surface. \nOperating between abstraction and figuration across different mediums\, Tang’s works\noften resist immediate recognition. His forms appear familiar yet elusive\, inviting\nsustained attention rather than instant interpretation. At the core of his practice is an\nongoing inquiry into perception – how images are formed\, how meaning emerges\,\nand how both remain inherently unstable. \nAcross two decades\, Tang has continued to refine and distill his approach\, pursuing\nthe same fundamental questions with increasing precision. This presentation marks a\npivotal moment in that trajectory. The new paintings bring together image\, material\,\nand structure into a tightly resolved yet open-ended condition\, where process and\nresult are held in balance. For Tang\, painting is not a means of searching for fixed\nanswers\, but a reciprocal process in which meaning emerges from the act of painting\nitself.

Instead\, it traces back to their original callings\, the courage they found in the face of challenges and their personal understanding of art\, life and immortality. \nTheir narratives weave together a powerful life-tapestry of perseverance\, conviction and heritage: from Yang Shi Bin’s profound bond with his mentor\, Kuo Pao Kun\, Jung Dong-hwan’s commitment to treating every show as the last one\, Nam Geung-ho’s radical street performance and arrest\, Kanji Shimizu’s visceral contemplation of life and death through Noh\, to Didik Nini Thowok’s “empty glass” philosophy and his cross-cultural advocacy despite facing multiple discriminations”. \nIn the dialogue between the virtual and the real\, imagination and projection\, the stage becomes a critical boundary connecting the living and the deceased\, the body and the soul. Highlights include: \n\nOur Current Creatures – large floating jellyfish-like forms made from plastic\, inviting visitors to look twice at what our waste becomes.\nE-Fossil: A Warning From Our Time – animal-like fossils assembled from e-waste and industrial materials\, imagining what future generations might unearth from today’s consumption.\nSOAR – an upcycled bird installation made from discarded milk bottles\, transforming everyday waste into a symbol of recovery and lift-off.\nScarecrow Guardians – playful fashion-based guardians made from repurposed clothes\, created with youth and circular fashion partners.\nDisposable Planet – a vibrant Earth formed from colourful fabric scraps\, led by Fashion Parade\, greeting visitors with a strong circular fashion message.

DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum proudly presents Hiroshi Sugimoto: Form is Emptiness\, the first major solo exhibition in Southeast Asia dedicated to the practice of internationally renowned Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. Conceived in dialogue with the Buddhist cosmological concept of the Five Elements (Earth\, Water\, Fire\, Wind and Void)\, the exhibition unfolds across five interconnected sections that loop into one another\, mirroring the cyclical rhythms of nature and life. This elemental framework reflects Sugimoto’s enduring inquiry into time\, perception\, and the structure of reality. \nBringing together over 60 works spanning five decades of his multidisciplinary practice\, including significant\, new\, and rarely seen works\, the exhibition reveals the breadth of Sugimoto’s oeuvre across photography\, sculpture\, and large-scale installation. From his meditative seascapes to architectural interventions and contemplative objects\, Sugimoto’s works delicately balance a strong material presence with a deep metaphysical inquiry.  \nForm is Emptiness offers an immersive introduction to the work of one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists. Moving between permanence and impermanence\, visibility and void\, the exhibition invites audiences to slow down and consider how form itself can become a vessel for reflection\, and how\, through Sugimoto’s lens\, the material world becomes a mirror for the mind.
