Led by the call-to-action “Let’s Play!”\, SIFA 2026 invites audiences to explore\, experiment\, engage and be inspired by the arts. \nSoak in the Festival vibes at the iconic Festival Village\, which makes its return this edition. Free performances\, public installations and communal spaces featuring local artists such as The Observatory\, The Theatre Practice and Off Root Theatrics welcome festivalgoers from dusk to dawn\, on the Festival grounds and beyond. This year\, SIFA brings two large-scale and high-impact artistic experiences from the Festival Village to Nexus\, Punggol Digital District\, enthralling the community with a soaring aerial performance featuring artists suspended 25 feet in the air\, and a speculative theatrical procession full of colour\, texture\, movement and melody. \nLocal commissioned productions and international works take the stage to bring together a cross collaboration of cultures and disciplines. From spotlighting homegrown cultural icons such as Jacintha Abisheganaden and Dick Lee\, and the reimagining of classics such as Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler by the National Theater Company of Korea\, and Hamlet by Peruvian company Teatro La Plaza and its cast of actors with Down syndrome\, to dance-based productions that blur the lines of reality through holographic technology and stunning stage illusions\, SIFA 2026 opens up multiple pathways and platforms for audiences to rediscover the joy and significance of coming together through art.

DESCRIPTION:ShanghART Singapore is delighted to present Simplified\, a solo exhibition by the\nChinese artist Tang Maohong\, opening on 16 May 2026 at 4pm. This exhibition brings\ntogether a selection of the artist’s latest paintings\, developed extensively over the past\nyear following his relocation to Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia. It also marks his return to\nSingapore after his 2019 solo exhibition\, and twenty years since his participation in the\nfirst Singapore Biennale. \nTang’s new body of work reflects a significant development in his practice\, centered\naround explorations into the process of painting\, and its relationship with the result.\nThe act of painting typically results in two outcomes – the image on the canvas and the\nmixed colours on the palette. The works stem from the approach of mixing colours\ndirectly on the painting surface instead of using a palette. This simple gesture\ncollapses two planes into one\, creating a mutually-influencing relationship within the\nsame pictorial space. \nOriginating from a period of constraint\, this approach has been refined over the past\nyear into a more distilled visual language. Tang pares down his compositions to focus\non the relationship between the intended image and the residual colour. Deceptively\nsimple\, the underlying tension is withheld from the apparent harmonious coexistence\nof the two elements\, experienced only upon prolonged inspection. \nTang’s practice has consistently engaged with the nature of images and how we\nperceive them. He initially opted to work with animation for its ability to explore the\ninstability of images through time. Forms derived from the real world would morph\,\ndissolve\, and reassemble\, remaining familiar yet resistant to fixed interpretations.\nOver time\, this temporal process became increasingly condensed\, leading him back to\npainting. What once unfolded sequentially is now internalised\, with shifts and\ntransformations embedded within a single\, suspended surface. \nOperating between abstraction and figuration across different mediums\, Tang’s works\noften resist immediate recognition. His forms appear familiar yet elusive\, inviting\nsustained attention rather than instant interpretation. At the core of his practice is an\nongoing inquiry into perception – how images are formed\, how meaning emerges\,\nand how both remain inherently unstable. \nAcross two decades\, Tang has continued to refine and distill his approach\, pursuing\nthe same fundamental questions with increasing precision. This presentation marks a\npivotal moment in that trajectory. The new paintings bring together image\, material\,\nand structure into a tightly resolved yet open-ended condition\, where process and\nresult are held in balance. For Tang\, painting is not a means of searching for fixed\nanswers\, but a reciprocal process in which meaning emerges from the act of painting\nitself.

DESCRIPTION:Bringing together five venerable performance artists from diverse Asian cultures\, Last Rites is a brand new\, cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary theatrical experience that confronts profound themes of endings and legacy. \nAt its core lies a soul-searching question: “If you could envision your last performance\, what would it look like?” Through in-depth interviews with these five living artistic bodies – whose average age is 74 – the piece avoids a direct depiction of death. Instead\, it traces back to their original callings\, the courage they found in the face of challenges and their personal understanding of art\, life and immortality. \nTheir narratives weave together a powerful life-tapestry of perseverance\, conviction and heritage: from Yang Shi Bin’s profound bond with his mentor\, Kuo Pao Kun\, Jung Dong-hwan’s commitment to treating every show as the last one\, Nam Geung-ho’s radical street performance and arrest\, Kanji Shimizu’s visceral contemplation of life and death through Noh\, to Didik Nini Thowok’s “empty glass” philosophy and his cross-cultural advocacy despite facing multiple discriminations”. \nIn the dialogue between the virtual and the real\, imagination and projection\, the stage becomes a critical boundary connecting the living and the deceased\, the body and the soul. DESCRIPTION:Singapore’s piano prodigy Mikkel Myer Lee is returning for his only Singapore performance of the third instalment of his Complete Beethoven Sonata Cycle. \nHe will be performing Piano Sonata No. 2\, No. 20\, No. 23 “Appasionata” and No. 26 “Les Adieux” by the venerable German musician and composer Ludwig van Beethoven. \nBe immersed in an evening of passion\, depth\, and timeless musical storytelling\, as Mikkel showcases his musical prowess through his renditions of Beethoven’s sophisticated and theatrical compositions. Conceived in dialogue with the Buddhist cosmological concept of the Five Elements (Earth\, Water\, Fire\, Wind and Void)\, the exhibition unfolds across five interconnected sections that loop into one another\, mirroring the cyclical rhythms of nature and life. This elemental framework reflects Sugimoto’s enduring inquiry into time\, perception\, and the structure of reality. \nBringing together over 60 works spanning five decades of his multidisciplinary practice\, including significant\, new\, and rarely seen works\, the exhibition reveals the breadth of Sugimoto’s oeuvre across photography\, sculpture\, and large-scale installation. From his meditative seascapes to architectural interventions and contemplative objects\, Sugimoto’s works delicately balance a strong material presence with a deep metaphysical inquiry.  \nForm is Emptiness offers an immersive introduction to the work of one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists. DESCRIPTION:ITSLIQUID Group is proud to announce the opening of SENSES 2026\, international\nexhibition of photography\, painting\, video art\, installation/sculpture\, which will take place at\nMUST Museum\, in Lecce\, a splendid gem in the South of Italy\, during Lecce Art Week\n2026\, from June 05 to June 28\, 2026.\nCurated by Amaride Ferrante\, Annachiara Recchia and Giulia Tassi\, and coordinated by\nLuca Curci\, Founder and Director of ITSLIQUID Group\, this year the exhibition journey is\nenriched by an extraordinary dialogue between contemporary research and historical\nmastery. Alongside the vibrant selection of international artists\, the MUST Museum will\nhost the special section “It’s Always Magic: Le icone del ‘900 italiano”\, featuring iconic\nworks by legendary figures of Italian art\, including Mario Schifano\, Mimmo Rotella\, Mimmo\nPaladino\, and Sandro Chia. This unique juxtaposition creates a bridge across generations\,\nplacing the urgent voice of contemporary creators in direct conversation with the masters\nwho redefined the visual landscape of the 20th century.

DESCRIPTION:Ascent to the Bamboo Forest — A Dance Travelogue serves as a rare window into a hidden geography of Asia: the mystical highlands of Northern Vietnam. \nFollowing a 2025 performance-lecture\, ARTS FISSION dancers Aisha Lozano\, Marveen Lozano\, Andine Elaina\, and Ignatius Sim have since distilled their initial movement vocabulary into a triptych under the guidance of Angela Liong. The work is a deeply personal contemplation of the reverence for the land\, the sincerity of communal rituals\, and the Traditional Ecological Knowledge gleaned from their time among the mountain villagers. \nIn a departure from traditional scoring\, composer Chua Jon-Lin facilitates a kinetic soundscape where the dancers utilise bamboo culms\, leaves\, and organic materials to generate a live\, rhythmic score that breathes with the movement. \nStep into this transformed clearing and witness a quiet beauty—a way of life and an ancestral wisdom standing on the brink of imminent loss.

Curated by New York-based independent curator and Zarina’s former studio manager Sarah Burney \, Directions to My House offers a deeply informed perspective on the artist’s life and work\, bringing together over 50 works from 12 lenders across multiple cities\, reflecting her life that was profoundly shaped by numerous continents – having lived across Bangkok\, New Delhi\, Paris\, Bonn\, Tokyo\, Santa Cruz\, and finally New York.
