It is the underlying rhythm that links ecosystems\, human and \nnon-human entities\, and balances the continuous evolution of the world. Within this \nframework\, artists\, designers\, and architects are invited to explore how this universal \nenergy manifests today\, investigating the subtle correspondences between soul and body\, \nhumanity and nature\, and organic and synthetic worlds. \nIn the works of Amira Yaakoubi\, the female body becomes a site where memory and \ndesire continuously intertwine: through layered compositions and expressive gestures\, her \npainting gives shape to figures suspended between strength and vulnerability\, \ntransforming the image into a reflection on identity and the female condition. A related \nsensibility emerges in the photographic practice of Maciej Max Dominik\, who reduces the \nbody to its essential form through black and white imagery and a rigorous control of light\, \nin which each photograph seems to strip away every superfluous element\, allowing \nmovement and presence to surface in a dialogue where the body never appears fixed or \ndefinitive\, but rather constantly shaped by emotional and perceptual transformation. \nNadine Collado\, instead\, develops a practice driven by intuition and spontaneity through \nabstract compositions that take form through layering\, tonal variations\, and free gestures\, \ncreating open and mutable images that shift according to the viewer’s gaze\, in an intuitive \ndimension that resonates with the photography of Romina Calini\, where each image \noriginates from an immediate response to reality. Light and atmosphere transform the \nphotographic act into a personal perception rather than a simple registration of the visible \nworld\, moving between inner experience and a sensitive interpretation of their \nsurroundings. \nThe theme of waiting runs through the work of Paolo Cristiani\, who observes airports\, \nhotels\, and transitional spaces as suspended environments\, almost detached from time: \nhis images transform the experience of contemporary travel into a rarefied dimension \nwhere architecture and human presence coexist in silent balance.

DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum (SAM) presents Maria Taniguchi: Afterimage\, the first monographic museum exhibition in Singapore by acclaimed Filipino artist Maria Taniguchi. \nAnchored by Taniguchi’s ongoing series of “brick paintings”—large-scale canvases composed through the repeated hand-painting of brick-like forms—the exhibition explores recurring themes in her practice including repetition\, time\, and labour. \nAfterimage brings together Taniguchi’s key works across painting\, sculpture and moving image\, offering an overview of her multidisciplinary practice. Alongside the “brick paintings\,” the exhibition features a site-specific iteration of her Runaways sculptures and four video works produced between 2010–2026. From Java plum wood sculptures to video works examining memory and labour\, the selection reveals the conceptual rigour and quiet intensity of one of Southeast Asia’s most significant contemporary artists. \nPresented following Taniguchi’s first survey exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) Manila\, Afterimage invites audiences to encounter the materiality\, scale\, and rhythm through an intimate exhibition setting at their own pace.

SUMMARY:Lai Yu Tong: The Dogs
DESCRIPTION:ShanghART Singapore is pleased to present Lai Yu Tong’s first solo exhibition with the gallery\, The Dogs\, opening on 30 August 2025. Featuring a new series of works that centres around his encounters with a pack of stray dogs\, the artist invites us to reconsider our relationship with entities that exist on the fringes of our environments\, while reflecting upon his own experiences and interactions with the dogs across several months. \nDrawing upon observations of the present\, Lai’s practice examines the overlooked and neglected. Everyday objects and subjects such as cars\, crows\, hands\, and chairs feature as motifs across his works that are cast within the stories and scenarios that he creates around them. By looking at something for extended periods of time\, he brings out alternative perspectives on the familiar. Recently\, his gaze fixates upon the stray dogs that he encounters around a forested area close to where he lives. Their existence as wild\, untamed and shy creatures that roam under the shadows of Singapore intrigues him. \nIn a highly developed and controlled society\, the presence of these dogs introduces a degree of unpredictability\, even instilling a sense of danger. Initial encounters with them ended with Lai retreating out of fear. However\, following multiple visits where he would observe\, photograph and sometimes feed the dogs\, the fear that he felt eventually shifts into a kind of love\, as he forms a connection with these misunderstood creatures. \nStorytelling makes up a big part of Lai’s approach\, manifesting in forms such as drawing\, sculpture\, and sound. In these latest works\, Lai seeks to retell his encounters with these enigmatic creatures through intimate pieces of drawings and collages on various modest everyday materials — cardboard\, wood\, and paper. He simultaneously draws and obscures the dogs\, playing with techniques of erasure and transparency that render his subjects as ghostly figures and impressions. Such loose methods of representation alludes to the elusiveness and placelessness of the subjects he draws\, whilst also allowing them to take on other identities and connotations. \nThrough a selection of two-dimensional works\, a sculpture\, a sound piece and a performance\, the gallery space is transformed into a site of encounter between the audience and the dogs. Bridging the distance between us and them through Lai’s own experiences\, the exhibition encourages visitors to empathise and identify with the beings that live on the edges of our environments; out of sight and away from what we are familiar with.
