SUMMARY:Days That Slip Away Untouched: A Solo Exhibition by Uji “Hahan” Handoko Eko Saputro Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:Gajah Gallery Singapore presents Days That Slip Away Untouched\, a solo exhibition by Indonesian artist Uji “Hahan” Handoko Eko Saputro. Following its debut in Jakarta\, the exhibition continues Hahan’s investigation into the shifting relationship between physical reality and its digital mediation. \nWorking across painting\, sculpture\, and sound\, Hahan examines how perception and meaning are conditioned within digitally mediated environments. His work probes the terms by which images and experiences are encountered\, tracing how distinctions between the real\, the constructed\, and the circulated are produced\, and how authenticity is negotiated in their wake. \nIn contrast to the immediacy of digital systems\, Hahan’s practice emphasises slowness and material engagement. Developed in close dialogue with the Ace House collective and his studio artisans\, the works emerge through what he describes as an “aesthetic kinship”\, a process rooted in shared labour and collective exchange. Across the exhibition\, Hahan appropriates imagery from works by Raden Saleh\, Tomás Sánchez\, and Walter Spies\, using these references to reflect on how knowledge\, power\, and ways of seeing have shaped historical narratives. In doing so\, the works draw attention to the instability of images in an era governed by algorithmic visibility\, where depth and context risk being flattened.Within these compositions\, moments of disruption appear through hybrid figures and altered landscapes\, introducing a sense of dissonance that unsettles familiar visual frameworks. These gestures operate as subtle “glitches”\, interrupting dominant modes of representation and\nopening up alternative ways of seeing and understanding. \nThe exhibition title\, Days That Slip Away Untouched\, speaks to an awareness of time that often passes without full attention. Across his practice\, Hahan foregrounds attentiveness —to history\, process\, and everyday experience— as a means of resisting this condition. Here\, authenticity is approached as something continually negotiated within the conditions of contemporary life.

Through their distinct artistic languages\, the participating artists explore themes of renewal\, resilience\, memory and wonder.\n\nThe exhibition brings together nine contemporary artists from Singapore\, China and Japan\, each offering a unique perspective on the relationship between light\, materiality and the natural world. Hosted in the historic heart of the city\, the event gathers a dynamic intersection of painting\, photography\, and performance\, inviting a worldwide audience to explore the depths of contemporary creative research. \nThis exhibition marks the second chapter of the ANIMA MUNDI ART FAIR 2026\, a historic\, regular appointment for Venice and a consolidated tradition that cyclically returns to light up the city’s art scene by highlighting compelling emerging and mid-career voices. This brilliant continuation follows the successful launch of the art fair’s first appointment\, RITUALS (May 20 – June 04\, 2026)\, which previously opened the season by showcasing more than 120 artists from over 20 nations. \nANIMA MUNDI is the vital energy that flows through everything\, the subtle force that connects all forms of existence\, from the natural to the artificial\, from the visible to the invisible. It is the living pulse of the world\, the rhythm that sustains transformation\, coexistence\, and renewal. Plato expressed his thoughts about ANIMA MUNDI in the Timaeus\, describing the universe – “this world is indeed a living being endowed with a soul and intelligence… a single visible living entity containing all other living entities\, which by their nature are all related”. \nToday\, this ancient vision returns with renewed urgency: ANIMA MUNDI is not just a metaphysical idea\, but an intuitive recognition of the invisible energy that flows through every form\, natural or artificial\, allowing the planet to live\, evolve\, and transform. However\, a complicated relationship between her and a hunter soon sends them on an emotional downward spiral like a cat and mouse game across time. \nInspired by the Southeast Asian folklore of the Penanggalan\, Here is part of Chong Tze Chien’s ongoing research and exploration on the intersection of traditional Southeast Asian puppetry\, The Finger Players’ puppetry methodology\, and the martial art Silat. \nThis work-in-progress showcase comprises two parts – a presentation of the story and a dialogue session between the creatives and audience after the presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum (SAM) presents Maria Taniguchi: Afterimage\, the first monographic museum exhibition in Singapore by acclaimed Filipino artist Maria Taniguchi. \nAnchored by Taniguchi’s ongoing series of “brick paintings”—large-scale canvases composed through the repeated hand-painting of brick-like forms—the exhibition explores recurring themes in her practice including repetition\, time\, and labour. \nAfterimage brings together Taniguchi’s key works across painting\, sculpture and moving image\, offering an overview of her multidisciplinary practice. Alongside the “brick paintings\,” the exhibition features a site-specific iteration of her Runaways sculptures and four video works produced between 2010–2026. From Java plum wood sculptures to video works examining memory and labour\, the selection reveals the conceptual rigour and quiet intensity of one of Southeast Asia’s most significant contemporary artists. \nPresented following Taniguchi’s first survey exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) Manila\, Afterimage invites audiences to encounter the materiality\, scale\, and rhythm through an intimate exhibition setting at their own pace.
