Featuring a new series of works that centres around his encounters with a pack of stray dogs\, the artist invites us to reconsider our relationship with entities that exist on the fringes of our environments\, while reflecting upon his own experiences and interactions with the dogs across several months. \nDrawing upon observations of the present\, Lai’s practice examines the overlooked and neglected. Everyday objects and subjects such as cars\, crows\, hands\, and chairs feature as motifs across his works that are cast within the stories and scenarios that he creates around them. By looking at something for extended periods of time\, he brings out alternative perspectives on the familiar. Recently\, his gaze fixates upon the stray dogs that he encounters around a forested area close to where he lives. Their existence as wild\, untamed and shy creatures that roam under the shadows of Singapore intrigues him. \nIn a highly developed and controlled society\, the presence of these dogs introduces a degree of unpredictability\, even instilling a sense of danger. Initial encounters with them ended with Lai retreating out of fear. However\, following multiple visits where he would observe\, photograph and sometimes feed the dogs\, the fear that he felt eventually shifts into a kind of love\, as he forms a connection with these misunderstood creatures. \nStorytelling makes up a big part of Lai’s approach\, manifesting in forms such as drawing\, sculpture\, and sound. In these latest works\, Lai seeks to retell his encounters with these enigmatic creatures through intimate pieces of drawings and collages on various modest everyday materials — cardboard\, wood\, and paper. He simultaneously draws and obscures the dogs\, playing with techniques of erasure and transparency that render his subjects as ghostly figures and impressions. Directors Claire Wong and ants chua reveal a rare insight into the domestic spaces that allow us to be the most vulnerable\, and the tender efforts we make to grapple with our past mistakes and our present selves. This intimate two-hander sees actors Genevieve Tan and Siti Sara Hamid delicately unfold the layers of identity\, of queerness\, and of vocation. \nAn exploration of loving\, living and dreaming amidst the relentless rhythm and rupture of daily life\, Common Room is both familiar and new; at once poetic and irreverent. SUMMARY:Latiff Mohidin: Lines to Form
DESCRIPTION:Gajah Gallery Singapore presents Latiff Mohidin: Lines to Form\, a landmark solo exhibition by one of Malaysia’s foremost modernist artists. The exhibition unveils Latiff Mohidin‘s first-ever cast bronze sculpture from his iconic Pago Pago series. Presented alongside a selection of works on paper\, the exhibition\, in collaboration with LM Studio\, brings into dialogue a new direction that illuminates the continuity of Latiff’s artistic vision across more than seven decades. \nFirst conceived in the early 1960s\, Pago Pago emerged as Latiff’s vision of a cosmopolitan yet regionally rooted modernism. Shaped by his travels across Southeast Asia\, it evolved into a distinctive visual language informed by the region’s landscapes\, architecture\, and cultural traditions\, while advancing a distinctly Southeast Asian perspective on modernism. The series’ enduring significance is reflected in its international recognition\, including its presentation at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2018. \nCurated by Syed Muhammad Hafiz of LM Studio\, the exhibition introduces Burung 1 (Bird 1)\, realised in collaboration with Yogya Art Lab (YAL)\, Gajah Gallery’s foundry arm based in Yogyakarta. Scaled from his original ciment fondu sculpture of the same name\, the work was cast in silicon bronze under Latiff’s direction\, thus marking the artist’s first foray into bronze and extending the enduring language of Pago Pago into a new medium. \nComplementing Burung 1 (Bird 1) is a selection of works on paper from the Pago Pago\, Gelombang\, Rimba\, and Voyage series. Together\, they trace the evolution of Latiff’s visual language—from the formative Pago Pago works of the 1960s to the landscapes of Gelombang and Rimba\, and meditations on travel and cultural encounters in Voyage. Spanning more than six decades\, these works affirm the coherence and enduring vitality of one of Southeast Asia’s most influential artistic practices.

In these latest works\, Lai seeks to retell his encounters with these enigmatic creatures through intimate pieces of drawings and collages on various modest everyday materials — cardboard\, wood\, and paper. He simultaneously draws and obscures the dogs\, playing with techniques of erasure and transparency that render his subjects as ghostly figures and impressions. Such loose methods of representation alludes to the elusiveness and placelessness of the subjects he draws\, whilst also allowing them to take on other identities and connotations. \nThrough a selection of two-dimensional works\, a sculpture\, a sound piece and a performance\, the gallery space is transformed into a site of encounter between the audience and the dogs. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception        : 15 August 2026\, 4pm \nExhibition Period           : 15 August 2026 – 4 October 2026 \nShanghART Singapore presents 13 Nightmares by Taiki Sakpisit\, opening on 15 August 2026. Over the past two decades\, Sakpisit has developed one of Southeast Asia’s most distinctive practices\, dissolving the boundaries between cinema and contemporary art. Frequently drawing upon Thailand’s histories\, folklore and political imaginaries\, Sakpisit’s works are rooted in the unstable terrain where personal memory and collective consciousness continually intersect. \n  \nThe premise of this exhibition can be traced back to a nightmare Sakpisit experienced in Singapore in 2018. A phone call from his brother awoke him from the nightmare\, informing him about the passing of a family member. Since then\, Sakpisit has become increasingly drawn to the intersections between dreams\, memory\, grief\, and premonition\, culminating in this exhibition. \n  \nIn his first solo exhibition with ShanghART Singapore\, Sakpisit transforms the gallery into a labyrinth of moving images\, photography\, sound and spectral presences. A series of photographic works appear as snapshots and fragments from different realities\, layering upon one another. Drawn from the artist’s collection of photographs shot over the past few years as a core part of his working process\, the images form a quiet yet intense distillation of Sakpisit’s memories and encounters with place and history. \n  \nAnchoring the exhibition\, the two-channel installation transforms cinematic language into a spatial\, sculptural\, and psychological encounter. Within this shifting landscape\, animism\, supernatural presences\, and altered states appear as recurring motifs through which Sakpisit evokes fear\, vulnerability\, and the persistence of the unconscious. Together\, they construct a landscape haunted by historical trauma and contemporary anxieties. \n  \nWorking across experimental film\, photography\, and installation\, Sakpisit continues to expand cinema beyond the conventions of projection\, inviting audiences to inhabit images physically and experience the moving image as an environment rather than a sequence of projected frames. Rather than following a linear narrative\, visitors navigate the exhibition as they might recall a dream: through fragments\, repetitions and sudden dislocations.

However\, following multiple visits where he would observe\, photograph and sometimes feed the dogs\, the fear that he felt eventually shifts into a kind of love\, as he forms a connection with these misunderstood creatures. \nStorytelling makes up a big part of Lai’s approach\, manifesting in forms such as drawing\, sculpture\, and sound. In these latest works\, Lai seeks to retell his encounters with these enigmatic creatures through intimate pieces of drawings and collages on various modest everyday materials — cardboard\, wood\, and paper. He simultaneously draws and obscures the dogs\, playing with techniques of erasure and transparency that render his subjects as ghostly figures and impressions. Such loose methods of representation alludes to the elusiveness and placelessness of the subjects he draws\, whilst also allowing them to take on other identities and connotations. \nThrough a selection of two-dimensional works\, a sculpture\, a sound piece and a performance\, the gallery space is transformed into a site of encounter between the audience and the dogs. Bridging the distance between us and them through Lai’s own experiences\, the exhibition encourages visitors to empathise and identify with the beings that live on the edges of our environments; out of sight and away from what we are familiar with.
