Ready but Postponed or Cancelled

August 8, 2020 - September 5, 2020

A+ Works of Art is pleased to present Ready but Postponed or Cancelled, a group exhibition featuring works by Chong Kim Chiew, Hà Ninh Pham, Noor Mahnun Mohamed, Leslie de Chavez, Pangrok Sulap and Yim Yen Sum. Ready but Postponed or Cancelled intends to provide these artists that have been left in uncertain circumstances, a physical platform to show works affected by the postponing and cancelling of exhibitions planned for the year. The exhibition is in collaboration with Arario Gallery and The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre.

This year, 2020, began with high prospects, with exciting exhibitions and events on the calendar. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic permeated across borders at haste, the artworld reacted prudently by putting exhibitions, art fairs and other anticipated events on hold, postponing them or even cancelling them entirely. All of the disruption has led to galleries accelerating the development of a slew of digital innovations and online platforms, in bids to disseminate artworks to audiences that have receded indoors.

While some works on show at A+ were parts of cancelled shows scheduled in 2020, others share glimpses of projects that have been deferred to 2021.

Chong Kim Chiew’s works on display have been extracted from a solo exhibition scheduled to happen in June, 2020 at A+ Works of Art. However, as Malaysia had implemented a nationwide lockdown a few months prior, in March 2020, the exhibition has been postponed to 2021.

Hà Ninh Pham’s works derive from his ongoing project, My Land, which was planned to be a part of World’s Apart, an exhibition with artist Trương Công Tùng, curated by Billy Nguyen, and in collaboration with The Factory, Vietnam, and scheduled for late 2020. Hà Ninh’s works engage observers in a whimsically fictional world, and brings the observer across fantastical seas and castles, through terrains found in sci-fi films and futuristic narratives. World’s Apart has been postponed to 2021.

Leslie de Chavez’s Annotating Histories is a series that seeks to extract muted or mutated meanings out of images culled from history in an attempt to memorialise history through the present-day lens, or to revisit them in order to present alternative narratives by reinventing possible other scenarios by juxtaposing the visual imagery with recent historical events. Leslie de Chavez’s works were planned to be a part of a group exhibition, also scheduled for this year, with Ahmad Fuad Osman and Angki Purbandono, and curated by Carlos Quijon Jr.; that show has been postponed to 2021.

Noor Mahnun Mohamed’s works Sarsi, Saline and Spray were included in a group exhibition, ‘RRRAWRRR!!!’ , held at Balai Seni Menara Maybank, Kuala Lumpur. Unfortunately, as the exhibition opened on 9 March, 2020, it received a lot less visibility than it should have received, due to the Movement Control Order, which was imposed on 18 March.

Pangrok Sulap celebrates their 10 years as a collective this year, however, due to travel restrictions, the members of the group have been separated; although they continue to produce works in Sabah, Malaysia. On show will be works that they produced as a part of the Aichi Triennale, 2019. The collective are working on producing two books to commemorate their decade together as a group,. Their 10th year anniversary exhibitions have been cancelled given the uncertainties of COVID-19.

Yim Yen Sum was expected to participate in Art Moments Jakarta, 2020; the organisers of the art fair have decided to cancel this year’s iteration. The artist had produced the works for a solo presentation that continues her practice, which records Malaysia’s urban architecture and history through the slow process of embroidery. In addition to her works for Art Moments Jakarta, on display are pieces that will be included in Current Alignments, an exhibition highlighting the uprising of a generation of Southeast Asian artists who are challenging existing colonial narratives and hegemonic power structures, and encouraging self-criticism and reflection. Current Alignments is postponed to 2021.

As many artists and institutions continue to face challenges to produce artworks and exhibitions, the gallery acknowledges that some projects may still not be realised as intended, or may remain somewhat incomplete. While the rest of 2020 remains unpredictable, Ready but Postponed or Cancelled aims to piece together fragments of potential exhibitions in support of artists in our community.
