17 October 2021 – WeiXin Quek Chong’s deep dreams_sublimed at A.I. Gallery London

We love it when our overlapping worlds collide! Plural writer Stephanie Yeap, who happens to be visiting London, got to meet up with artist WeiXin Quek Chong and check out her solo exhibition, deep dreams sublimed, presented by A.I. Gallery.

The show brings together recent works by Chong, which feature sculpture, video, print, as well as installation. If you’re reading this in Singapore, experience the show through the pics and captions despatched by Stephanie.

Stephanie met up WeiXin Quek Chong and checked out her solo exhibition, deepdreams_sublimed at A.I. Gallery in London!
Seemingly abstract, elongación líquida was created by compressing orchids – a flower heavily associated with Western fantasies of the tropics – in vacuum bondage.
A favourite work of Stephanie’s is this sculptural object that draws on the Asian myth of the fox spirit. Here, Chong taps into its shapeshifting nature to highlight accompanying ideas of gender fluidity.
orchid breathing in deep blue mode.2, a work Chong originally developed for a commission by the Botanical Art Gallery in Singapore. Derived from placing an orchid plant under latex vacuum bondage, Chong relates its references to fetish and fantasy to the horticultural fervour behind the avid classifying and collecting that underpinned colonial botanical collections.
