18 October 2022 — Surface Tensions at Restaurant Nouri
Restaurant Nouri’s back with a new hang, titled Surface Tensions. It features a slick selection of photography-based works by local artists Dylan Chan, ila, Sarah Isabelle Tan and Zulkhairi Zulkiflee. The visually arresting pieces showcase the malleable potential of the photographic surface, while thinking about the complications of memory, identity, representation, and our relationships with the world around us.
Check out the photos below to see what’s on show.
Surface Tensions runs at Restaurant Nouri until 8 January 2023.
Zulkhairi Zulkiflee’s works at the entrance of Nouri (Left) and in the private dining room (Right). They are all based on the same image of a Malay man with a motorcycle helmet, serving as repetitive abstractions of identity.
(Right) Dylan Chan with Untitled (Golden Hour).
Chan’s series of photo collages looks at the complications of memory, while capturing visceral moments of lust, trust, and intimacy.
ila with her series the sons and daughters of hungry ghosts. The film-based works were produced by dipping film into the waters near reclaimed lands, to contemplate the violence and loss that comes with land reclamation.

Sarah Isabelle Tan with her floral photogram works. These works are the result of exposing light-sensitive materials to light at different times of day, while the floral motif is a nod to lost love and the slippery notion of permanence.
