Beyond and Back, a solo by two emerging Singapore artists Matthias Chua and Dominic Thian, has opened at The Arts House.
Aiming to be a “simple and harmonious manner of creating and appreciating art”, the show, reflective of each artist’s technical prowess, doesn’t disappoint. Chua’s and Thian’s styles are evocative of traditional painting, testifying to their technically intensive training at St. Petersburg’s prestigious Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture and the Grand Central Atelier in New York respectively.
Atmospheric still life paintings burst with beautifully rendered flowers and tropical fruit, while smaller works recall moody landscapes and scenes of travels abroad. We were particularly taken by Chua’s moving ode to his mother, who supported him in his creative pursuits, while Thian’s gorgeous depictions of carnations brought to mind the drama of Dutch painting.
