6 September 2022 – Algorithmic Fissures at Supernormal
Over the weekend, we caught Algorithmic Fissures, a show by Jaxton Su and Jamie Cooper over at Supernormal. It proved to be a tight, thoughtful commentary on digital consumerism and commodification today. We say it’s definitely worth visiting before it closes on 25 September 2022.

Su’s On and On caught our eye. It’s an experimental film that touches on the overload of information and online shopping. The character in the video will start to erupt like a volcano after a while, reflecting the overwhelmed psyche of someone who is constantly connected to the digital world. (If you listen closely, there’s an AI voice-over of Su’s poetry on the subject!)
(Left) Cooper’s light sculptures Algorithmic Formation reflect how late capitalism has adopted new and pervasive symbols. (Spot the Nike logo here). (Right) Another set of Cooper’s light sculptures. Titled Cosmic Handbag ensemble, they take the form of florescent pink handbags.
Check out Su’s Add to Cart. It replicates a baggage claim with parcels instead of luggage, with a screen showing flash sales to reflect our relentless desire to consume
In Su’s De Rigueur Assemblage, 3D prints in sealed plastic hang from retail racks. These question our pursuit of requisites that many consider mandatory in our lives — everything from cars to smartphones, and luxury handbags to children.
