1 August 2023—Jane Lee: In Praise of Silence 寂靜在說話 runs at STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery

Curated by Tan Siuli, Jane Lee: In Praise of Silence at STPI is a must-visit if you’re looking for a dose of zen.

Entering the gallery, you’re faced with a projection of leaves’ shadows swaying in the breeze, leaving you in a tranquil headspace to explore the rest of the show. On display is a variety of monochrome compositions bursting with textures akin to cracked eggshells—with birds hatching from eggs symbolising new life.

Our favourites were the works by the rightmost corridor, which is dimmed for dramatic effect. It’s easy to get caught up in the enchanting, large paper-based works that are enveloped in particles of crushed obsidian and glisten in the soft light.

Gentle pastel hues and glittering textures also grace several works, marking Lee’s experimentations in grinding up semi-precious stones and minerals and applying them to paper.

Jane Lee: In Praise of Silence 寂靜在說話 is an undoubtedly beautiful show highlighting ethereal paper-based works that Lee produced during her second residency at STPI. But equally remarkable is how sensuous the exhibition is, as it immerses us in Lee’s world and offers us a moment of serenity amidst society’s hustle and bustle.

Jane Lee: In Praise of Silence 寂靜在說 runs at STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery till 3 September 2023.
