Tell us about your outfit – what are you wearing and where is everything from?
This is my all-time favourite jacket which I have worn to death, from Armani Exchange. My beautiful floral shirt is from Zara. These super skinny stretch jeans are from H&M so I don’t have to put on any belt.

They always make me look like I am going to break out some dance moves!
How do you decide what to wear at openings of your own exhibitions?
I usually go for a smart casual dress code, but it really depends on my mood and what I have in my limited wardrobe collection. I’m usually in floral patterns, bright coloured T-shirts with a black jacket over them and black or blue denim jeans. Sometimes, I will whip out my favourite bowler hat and the occasional scarf just to spice things up a bit.
Why don’t more Singaporean men dress up?
Maybe we are just being lazy!
Either that, or it’s because of the hot and humid climate here in the tropics, I think. I do see an increase in the number of men taking time to look sharp and flamboyant these days.
Do you dress like this every day? Why or why not?
I don’t dress like this every day because, most of the time I am either painting and cutting things up at the studio or driving around, running errands for the family. It’s just not practical. Making artworks can be quite messy sometimes and plus, my studio only has a few fans and a portable air-conditioning unit.
What do you want us to know about your art practice?
My mind is always restless. At times I am awakened at night from sleep by dreams and ideas. I take note of them and experiment with them. This is why I am either drawing or painting or even fiddling with musical instruments all the time.
I feel like I am expressing my ideas and recording them down through different art forms as quickly and plentifully as I can. It’s like my mind is frantically trying to do as much as it can, in this short life of ours.
What’s your favourite artwork or artist right now?
Anything from Jane Lee from Singapore. I find her works very mysterious and dramatic at the same time.
