With its industry-disrupting capabilities and inevitable impact on our lives, AI is no doubt a hot topic. At Comma Space’s ‘Speak Spindle つむ・くち,’ artist-curator Yutaka Inagawa considers this with a series of psychedelic works which he created with the help of AI Midjourney.
Hanging from the walls are sheets of satin-like fabric with an array of eerily familiar photographs on them, depicting various scenes from dingy shopping malls and shop windows. These images were originally captured by the artist during his last visit to Singapore in 2017, with Mustafa being one of the locations he visited. These images were then fed into Midjourney, resulting in their uncanny feel. With this, the artist prompts us to consider how digitally altered images can fit (or sneak) into our lives, based on their convincing appearances.
Adding to this sense of warping is the stencilled text on the wall. This features Japanese phrases that the artist took from Twitter, which he then translated into English with translation apps—encouraging us to think about the nuances that might be lost in digital processes. There are fun, interactive wearable artworks which take the form of gloves made from the satin imprinted with the images that were fed into Midjourney. Definitely a small but thought-provoking show worth your visit!
‘Speak Spindle つむ·くち’ runs at Comma Space till 23 July 2023. Check out the photos below for a peek at the works!
