30 August 2021 – Zoey Wong at Coach/Genevieve Ang at KKI Sweets

How much do we love it when art moves out of the white cube and into real life encounters full of fun, fashion and food?

This past weekend we had the pleasure of visiting 2 such exciting spots. First up, the very talented Zoey Wong held the fort at the Coach pop-up shop in Teck Lim Rd. The whole space is an homage to vintage handbags and Zoey was on-site to add her funky embroidery to the bags for any customers who wanted the work done. We’ve been following her fine art practice for some time (with all its fierce interventions into human hair and notions of memento mori) so it was really exciting to see her work here in the field of contemporary fashion. She’s next at the pop-up over 10-12 Sep, if you want to visit.

Next, we stopped at KKI Sweets which has found a new home at 3 Seah Street. The confections are simply amazing, part of the brand’s efforts to “create excitement for a new generation” of young gourmands. The shop has a collab going on with artist Genevieve Ang who’s created an immersive dining table installation, framed as part of a kabuki stage, with her ceramics as the “performers.” A booklet of text and illustrations accompanies the works. We especially loved “7 minutes late” a work made of 60 small pots, paired with the droll humour of a really insightful piece of text. From now till 21 Nov, you can mull over the impermanence of time in the work “In Space, A Sign,” while feasting on some truly innovative made-in-Singapore fare.
